Possum Laws in Tasmania: What Hobart Owners Need to Know
- Brushtail possums are protected. They cannot be bought, sold, taken or possessed without a permit (NRE Tas).
- The recommended approach is exclusion. Find the entry points, close them after the possum leaves at night, and make permanent repairs once sure it is empty.
- Trapping and relocating "does not generally work", according to NRE Tas. As a last resort, a Special Purposes Wildlife Permit to trap can be issued, with strict conditions.
- Property Protection Permits are for primary producers dealing with browsing damage. They are not for roof possums.
- Mainland rules, such as Victoria's 50 m release rule or Queensland's 25 m rule, do not apply in Tasmania.
- Contact NRE Wildlife Services on 03 6165 4305 for permit questions.
